About Us

For treatment of Thalassaemia children we have built up a hospital infront of Agriculture Farm: Kalna Road, in Burdwan District, 100 Km away from Calcutta. This hospital is the only heaven for the thalassaemic children of Burdwan, Nadia, Birbhum, Bankura , Midnapur, Purulia , Hoogly, Murshidabad, whole of North Bengal & Bhagalpur District of Bihar state.
To build this hospital we have solicited & raised donation from many persons of different Districts and also from passengers of local trains and so no. We are giving blood transfusion to the Affected children. We could afford Desferal injection once a month only to some poor patients. We started the hospital with 30 patients but at present about 250 patients come regularly for treatment.

We are helpless to afford desferal injection and oral tablets according to the need of patients as because this is a Voluntary Organization running purely on public donation. We are terrified and perturbed by the progressive spread of Thalassaemia . So, we decided not to have the birth of Thalassaemia child any more. For the that reason we are holding seminars with students of higher classes of different schools and also motivating the prospective bride and bridegrooms to have premarital carrier testing. On the other hand we are moving house to house in village area around Burdwan to survey the situation of the people by asking them to have to have their gene to be tested. At the same time, we are stressing on the necessity to reduce the number of thalassaemia carriers. In 1993 we held a camp for detecting the Thalassaemia carriers, we found 10% carriers .Now a days the number of carries has increased to 20% --30%. We have undertaken continuous propaganda in order to diminish this disease. We want neither the carriers nor the patients. On 8th may '98 i.e. Interaction Thalassaemia Day, Carrier detection has been started in our hospital, to meet up the crisis of blood for the Thalassaemic patients and public, constant endeavor for setting up a Blood Bank is going on. As it is a blood related disease, we are to work on AIDS in different areas order to have AIDS free blood for our patients.

Before marriage, every young man and woman should test genetic (Blood Test) factor.

What is Thalassaemia

Thalassemia is a blood disorder passed down through families (inherited) in which the body makes an abnormal from of Hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cell that carries oxygen. The disorder results in large numbers of red blood cells being destroyed, which leads to anemia.

Treatment

Treatment for Thalassemia major often involves regular blood transfusion and folate supplements. If you receive blood transfusion, you should not take iron supplements. Doing so can cause a high amount of iron to build up in the body, which can be harmful. Persons who receive a lot of blood transfusions need a treatment called chelation therapy. This is done to remove exces iron from the body. A bone marrow transplant may help treat the disease in some patients, especially children.

Outlook (Prognosis)

Severe Thalassemia can cause early death (between age 20 and 30) due to heart failure. getting regular blood transfusion and therapy to remove iron from the body helps improve the outcomes.

Less severe forms of Thalassemis often do not shorten lifespan. you may want to seek genetic counselling if you have a family history of the condition and are thinking of having children.

Possible Complications

Untreated,Thalassemia major leads to heart failure and liver problems. It also makes a person more likely to develop infections. Blood transfusions can help control some symptoms, but carry a risk of side effects from too much iron.
